Voltammetric (CSV) quantitative determination of thiouracil derivatives (MTU, PTU & BTU) in human urine 10.2003 - 06.2004

Type: MSc thesis – analytical chemistry / electrochemistry Place: Faculty of Chemistry, University of Łódź, Poland

6-benzyl-2-thiouracil (BTU)The main goal of this project was to develop a new method for quantitative determination of 6-methyl-2-thiouracil (MTU), 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) and 6-benzyl-2-thiouracil (BTU), an important thyreostatic drugs and also prohibited thyroid supplements in fodder (according to EU regulations), in human urine. The voltammetric behaviour of MTU, PTU, BTU has been studied by means of Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CSV) at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE)

HMDE - Hanging Mercury Drop Electrode

Various types and pHs of buffers, accumulation potential, and preconcentration time were checked to find the best conditions. The final procedure was very competitive to other known analytical methods especially for BTU determination with the respect to its simplicity and because it utilizes only the most common chemical reagents.
